Select A Candidate

This week I tried out a few of the "select a candidate" questionnaires that you can find all over the internet. I was hoping a nameless, faceless quiz would tell me who to vote for so I wouldn't have to face the pressure of deciding. I don't want to spend the next four years feeling guilty about the person I help put in the White House. If I let the quiz decide for me, all guilt is removed...

Unfortunately, the three questionnaires did not arrive at a consensus for me. This one gave me Barack Obama. This one gave me John Edwards. This one gave me Hilary Clinton. Out of sheer frustration, I tried a fourth. Somehow, this one resulted in a tie between John Edwards and Mike Huckabee (I'm not quite sure how that's possible...).

I think what this means is one or more of the following:
a. The quizzes are hopelessly flawed
b. The quizzes are all operated by leftist groups who are trying to convince America to vote Democratic
c. I'm a liberal
d. None of the Democratic candidates are very different from each other
e. I am deeply dissatisfied with all of the potential candidates and only agree with about 10% of any of their platforms

I'm not sure if you were meaning to make that post funny, but I was laughing my butt off. I'm kinda in the same boat as you and I'm surrounded by people who will question my faith/sanity if I dare vote for a democrat.

5 reasons not to read anything posted by pastorboy...
1. He doesn't understand why anyone could possibly think anything different than him
2. To him the world liberal automatically means "motherFer" instead of "loved human created by God"
3. Ray Comfort? Really?
4. He doesn't recognize that all political systems and politicans are flawed and represent the kingdom of the world and not the kingdom of God
5. His head is aparently still up Newt Ginrich's circa 1994 butt and he still believes everything that conservative politicians said.

I wouldn't question your faith or your sanity. But I'd probably disagree with the solutions you'd propose to the problems of our time.

That's what I find to be the major difference between political parties in the U.S. - they largely agree on what the problems are (except, notably, on social issues) but they disagree strongly on the solutions.

Democrats tend to favor governmental solutions to problems, and the higher up the governmental hierarchy, the better. Federal solutions are best, then State, and then local.

Republicans tend to favor non-governmental solutions to problems, and the lower down the hierarchy the better. Local solutions are best, then State, and then if necessary, Federal.

Personally, I believe that government has a legitimate sphere of influence, as the Bible frequently attests, but that it is often NOT the best tool to solve problems. Government in the Bible seems to be charged with establishing justice, above all else, and not much else.

I believe that the Republican philosophy of government best suits this approach.

And to "Come on....really??," I'd say that while pastorboy and I mix it up often, and I disagree with his "Clinton Body Count" post, your #'s 2, 4, and 5 are unloving and incorrect descriptions of him, and unworthy of a brother.

Okay, first, Erik, these things all happened, these people were all connected with the Clintons, but it in no way says that the Clintons directly or indirectly had a role in these people's deaths....still ...a little spoooooky...hence the word ((coincidence))

Top five reasons not to listen to come on...really?
1. He makes a stabbing remark anonomysly, and runs.
2. He makes statements that are generalized like "He doesn't understand why anyone could possibly think anything different than him" that are unsubstansiated and does not reference any of PB's other works.
3. To him, placing words in another persons mouth is okay when the scripture speaks against bearing false witness (commandment #9)
4. What is wrong with Ray Comfort?
5. His statement # 4 is opposite to what PB actually has said in comments on this blog and on other blogs.

Denes, excellent rundown I would add Republicans want to place more power with the private sector, working towards personal responsibility. I like this because it puts the responsibility for 'the least of these' out of governments hands and back into the churches- where it belongs.

Hmmm...yes...well...I suppose I ought to reenter the fray...

Come on....really??:
I am in total agreement on #1. I understand and appreciate the sentiments of #2, however, 'motherFer' might be a bit strong. #3 and #4, again, total agreement. #5...probably unsubstantiated and probably a bit mean.

"Government in the Bible seems to be charged with establishing justice, above all else, and not much else."

I think I agree with this statement. However, the question for me then is what is justice? I've done a lot of study on this (a great place to go is a book called "Kingdom Ethics" by Stassen/Gushee) and 'justice' as used in Isaiah and by Jesus (who frequently quotes Isaiah) is related to deliverance of the oppressed and the poor. If the government is charged with establishing justice, then it is precisely their responsibility to attempt to deliver the oppressed and the poor. The fact that governments have so frequently abdicated this responsibility is disheartening. The church, in working to establish the new kingdom on earth, is also mandated to work for justice.

Pastorboy:
The Clinton thing is simply ridiculous. You could do the same thing with any public figure who has ten million acquaintances.

"I like this because it puts the responsibility for 'the least of these' out of governments hands and back into the churches- where it belongs."

You certainly won't get an argument from me that the church ought to be caring for 'the least of these'. However, I ask you again (as remained unanswered in a previous post):
Given your perspective that it is necessary to start with the gospel presentation and deal with social responsibility as secondary issues, aren't you perpetuating the problem? If you would only offer aid to those who have been soundly saved, who is going to help everyone else? It is that mentality that created the need for the government social safety nets to begin with.

Actually, both Republicrats and Demopublicans favor government solutions to problems; they just differ on the degree to which government should be involved and the aspects of our lives that require government control. For instance, Republicrats want government to tell us what we can read and/or view on the Internet and TV, what kind of drugs/medicine we can use, and how we can spend our money (as an example, Republicrats want gambling to be illegal because it exploits the poor, yet they don't seem to have any problem with high-interest credit cards or payday loans, which also exploit the poor).

Demopublicans seek government solutions to other problems, such as poverty and violent crime. In order to prevent crime, they seek to disarm the victims. In an effor to eliminate poverty, they seek to forcibly redistribute wealth.

What it all boils down to, I think, is the desire to force unredeemed people to behave in redeemed ways, to coin a phrase from another Alliance blogger.

The one party that consistenly seeks non-governmental approaches to problems is the Libertarian Party, yet I don't believe they have it completely right, either. Often Libertarians don't recognize areas where government has a legitimate reason to be involved, including the protection of our borders. This is why I prefer to call myself a constitutionalist.

Corey,

Actually # 5 is the most accurate thing he said about me. If we could go back to the era of Newt, and better yet, Reagan, you would have a very happy person. The rest are patently inaccurate and not in line with who I am. But thats okay, I am willing to be persecuted.

As far as the Clinton thing, I said that already.... I thought fundamentalists were the only ones without a sense of humor...sheesh

Evangelism must be connected with social justice for it to be social justice. Unless you have a view that man is good, and that he has no sin problem that is likely the root of all other problems, humanistic answers do nothing but bring temporary comfort. We need to help the least of these with a total package. I believe we are most effective when we start at the spiritual.

Wow way to dodge the question completely.

At 4:26 PM, Blogger Corey said...

so again, i ask the question: What happens to those with whom you "start with the spiritual" but God has not decided to save? Do we let them starve?

At 6:40 PM, Blogger pastorboy said...

I think I said that it is part of the same package.

Great examples include the Salvation Army, the Pacific Rescue Mission, and others which help the least of these with food and shelter as part of the package with presenting the Gospel very clearly on a nightly basis.

I don't think it is fair to characterize it as requiring a commitment on their part. The only commitment is to listen, which we can only observe if they are in the room while the Gospel is presented. They may not be listening, but they are present. How can you even measure that?

But don't we have to do everything that we can to address the spiritual? Or is it somehow more merciful to feed and clothe them so that they are comfortable on the road to hell? If we don't even assist in the changing of behaviors that might lead to their situation, because we might be perceived as having an agenda, are we really helping or just exaserbating their plight? I think these are fair questions to answer as we pursue how best to serve the lost.

I remember taking a begging vietnam vet to breakfast with the condition that we would talk while he ate. As he scarfed down his sausage mc muffin and sipped his coffee I shared the Good News. It did not result in a commitment to the Lord, but at least he had a meal in his belly and the truth in his ears, and some love and respect enough to spend some time and have a conversation. This is what I am talking about.
